Time Capsule

We suppose that forever began when we were 7 and 8 years old. By high school, we had become each other’s sounding board, confidants, and fellow explorers of the theoretical, philosophical, and goofballery. Even in our post-college days, we were there for each other when one of us had a crush on someone or one of us was going through a gnarly breakup. We always had each other. Life eventually took us in different directions, but we always stayed connected, picking right back up where we left off no matter how much time passed. The books we read together changed over the years and so did our time zones, but adapting to change always felt easy when it came to us.

There is no doubt we have loved each other all this time, but romantic love between us was never worth the risk to our friendship. We never talked about it. We just independently maintained the protective wall around our friendship. Until a 7-hour conversation on New Year’s Day invited an honesty that felt like time itself was waiting for us to discover.
